Eagle’s Retreat, Thekkady
Thekkady
INTRODUCTION Rather than a fairy tale beginning, Eagle's Retreat started with a tale of a lost cow. One evening, a cow went missing on Simon’s newly acquired coffee plantation. He found it late at night in an uncleared area but couldn’t move it since it had hurt its leg. Next morning when Simon went back, he saw that this wild patch of the plantation had the most stunning view of the hills. In a masterstroke, he decided to combine the hospitality project with his love for antiques. Simon’s wife, Maria efficiently manages the bookings and interactions with guests before they arrive. Simon shuttles between his house in the plains and the plantation while Roy, the affable manager resides full time and is very helpful. LOCATION Today, this hotel in Thekkady has an unusual array of heritage cottages transplanted onto the hillside. Each cottage is a restored traditional Kerala house, made mostly of wood. The wooden style continues into the bathrooms and some even have an open courtyard. Care has been taken to see that modern fittings blend well with the surroundings. Simon has furnished the cottages with antique style furniture. Privacy is the best feature that this hotel in Thekkady has to offer. The location is up on a hill in Thekkady enroute to Periyar Tiger Reserve from Kottayam. It takes a while to get to this charming luxury bed & breakfast in Thekkady through a steep winding path from the main road. Once here in this hotel in Thekkady, the view is amazing as it is right on the edge of the valley. There is nothing between you and the forested mountains on the opposite side. ROOMS & SERVICE It may be hard to turn your back on the panoramic view from the verandah of your cottage.  But it is completely worth your while as the food is as good as the view. The walk between the villas and the restaurant with several steps cut into the hilly terrain is probably the only activity that some guests will ever do at Paradisa. For others, the estate walk is a great way to explore the hilltop property. The restaurant is an open structure with a thatched roof that is remade every year. The food is primarily Kerala cuisine with some delicious innovations. The staff here in this hotel in Thekkady can help if any food preferences have to be managed. All this makes Eagle's retreat the best  of Thekkady resorts with swimming pool.Boutique resort with restored traditional cottages on a hill overlooking the Western Ghats. Evergreen, Mundayakam
Thekkady
Succulent local cuisine, charming hosts, an art deco bungalow, all amidst a rubber plantation. INTRODUCTION The first thing that strikes visitors is that the house seems to be out of place in a quiet Kerala rubber plantation. Though there are bigger plantation houses in the area, Evergreen has an unusual design. A mix of colonial bungalow style and Art Deco elements, this homestay in Thekkady provokes curiosity about its history. As you wander inside, you see a horseshoe shaped dining table and your curiosity grows. Not to worry, you can get your questions answered by the extremely affable host, George Abraham. He is passionate about the history of plantations in Kerala and has authored a book on the subject with another due soon. ROOMS George is the fifth generation of his family to manage the 100 acre plantation. He lives at Evergreen with his soft-spoken wife Anju, a daughter and son. Built in 1955, it is a comfortable homestay in Thekkady with plenty of space and light. They have kept renovations to the minimum so that the character of the house is intact. The two rooms meant for guests are large and furnished with lovely old wooden furniture. The rooms are interconnected so it is perfect for a family with children or a group of friends. One of the bedrooms has an air-conditioner. The rooms lead out to a private verandah meant for guests. The house also has a large porch at the entrance, which is a great place to relax with a book or look at the soothing greenery.  The bathroom fittings are rather old fashioned in keeping with the colonial feel but are spotless and spacious. SERVICE While George will feed your mind, Anju keeps the body going with great food. Her repertoire of Kerala dishes is authentic and delicious but she can tone it down or up depending on the guests’ palate. Guests are welcome to watch the cooking. This homestay in Thekkady makes a great stop over to relax on the way to the hills of Munnar and Thekkady or on the return journey to Kochi. Since they take in only one set of guests at a time, they are free to help with information about the area and plan activities Destination Guide - Kerala - BackwatersSucculent local cuisine, charming hosts, an art deco bungalow, all amidst a rubber plantation.

Thekkady
INTRODUCTION An oasis of quiet luxury in an unlikely place is an apt and oft repeated description of this Luxury Spice Estate by guests. About 15 minutes drive from Periyar Reserve in Thekkady, this estate is set in a 7 acre spice planation. Salim Pushpanath, a well-known photographer found this place while researching his book on Indian spices. Initially meant for his own use, he decided to share it with travelers who would appreciate the peace and calm. Salim often travels away on work but the superb hospitality of this oasis remains the same because of charming, twinkle-eyed Pirkko.  Of Finnish descent and British nationality, Pirkko and her husband, John came to Kerala on a holiday but ended up as long term residents. They live nearby and she manages it for Salim. ROOMS The first and lasting impression about this luxury bed and breakfast in Thekkady is the attention to detail and beauty in each room. It has been kept to four rooms to ensure space and privacy for guests. The spacious suite rooms are part of the main house and have a balcony each. At this luxury bed and breakfast in Thekkady, the two pool rooms are a minute’s walk away over a jungle style wooden walkway. Both have a private plunge pool overlooking the estate. SERVICE There is a small verandah followed by a lounge area with comfortable seating and a separate open dining area with tables overlooking the estate. The food is classic Kerala cuisine done very well. The homemade bread at breakfast, masala chai and banana fritters are great. Pirkko is at hand to tell you the local names of the dishes in her charming accent and the chef, Krishna is happy to do a private cooking lesson if arranged in advance. Most guests tend to combine this luxury spice estate stay in Thekkady, Kerala with a visit to the Periyar Wildlife sanctuary, just 8 km away.  Muted luxury, good food with strong ethnic touch in a typical mixed farming environs is a wonderful combination.
