Pondicherry (4)

View from the down, Pondicherry hotel
Tamil Quarter Mansion, Pondicherry
Pondicherry
INTRODUCTION I have never seen any hotel staff who is so happy to see you. This is true across the board from Dinu, the General Manager to the restaurant server. Since it is a small Pondicherry heritage hotel with only ten rooms, every staff member performs multiple tasks and they do it competently. This Pondicherry heritage hotel is situated in the Tamil Quarter of Puducherry and has a facade characteristic of Franco Tamil architecture. It was originally a registrar office in the erstwhile French colony. Dinu says that even now older couples who got married here come to take a look at the building. It was almost falling down when the management decided to restore and run it as a boutique Pondicherry heritage hotel. It took them almost two years of rebuilding with help from INTACH, a heritage conservation society to create the gracious house. ROOMS The simple yet elegant entrance begins from a raised covered porch just off the street, a traditional Tamil feature. The rest of the house is created around two consecutive courtyards with the reception, restaurant, tiny bar and kitchen on the ground floor. The rooms are mainly on the first and second floor around the courtyards. The passages have coloured glass panels on the walls, another typical feature of the area. Though the architects have managed to create a few communal areas, there is no real garden or lounge area in this Pondicherry heritage hotel. The reception area has a small seating area that can function as a lounge at a pinch and one of the courtyards has a few tables and chairs. To offset a stark look, there is a profusion of greenery in large pots in the courtyards, which is pleasing to the eye. The rooms are of different sizes but well furnished with antique style furniture. The bathrooms in this Pondicherry heritage hotel are on the smaller side with modern amenities. SERVICE Given the small size of this Pondicherry heritage hotel, the restaurant has a limited menu for lunch and a set menu for dinner. The fare is a mix of Indian and European cuisine. The focus is on seafood given Pondicherry’s coastal setting. The chef prides himself on selecting the best fresh produce each day and the results show up in the delicious dishes that change every day. Breakfast is standard with both continental and South Indian options. Destination Guide - PondicherryThe Tamil Quarter of Puducherry houses this traditional home, featuring fantastic seafood specials.

Governor’s Heritage Villa, Pondicherry
Pondicherry
Creole and Continental cuisine delight visitors at this 250 year villa in the French Quarter of Puducherry INTRODUCTION If Governor's Heritage Villa in Pondicherry were a person, the first thing you would say on meeting him/her is “ you just don’t look your age”. It’s hard to believe that a 250 year or older villa can still look this good. Its thick walls stand testament to its history starting life as part of the erstwhile French Governor’s complex, then as a private home and now as a small hotel. A group of four Pondicherry businessmen bought this villa in the heart of the French Quarter for sentimental reasons and decided to run it as a boutique hotel so that it can continue to be maintained in its original condition. ROOM This heritage villa in Pondicherry was built in the traditional Pondicherry style of a central walled courtyard with the house built around it. The first impression on entrance is that of high doorways painted in a delicious blue-green colour in a beautiful contrast to the yellow shaded walls. With only ten rooms, this heritage villa in Pondicherry has a peaceful vibe despite being in the centre of the tourist area. The thick walls help in keeping out noise. The rooms are of varying sizes and shapes. Spacious with high ceilings and four-poster beds, the two suite rooms are the best choice. The deluxe rooms are regular while the two standard rooms are best for single occupancy or a cosy twosome. The bathrooms in this heritage villa in Pondicherry have modern amenities. A sunny restaurant that also serves as the breakfast room is on a mezzanine level from the courtyard. Adjacent to the restaurant, there is a tiny bar with just a few tables. Although not consistent with the heritage character, a favourite place for guests is the wooden deck on stilts in the courtyard. SERVICE Breakfast is continental with choice of eggs, toast, juice and coffee/tea. The restaurant in this heritage villa in Pondicherry offers a choice of Indian, French and Pondicherry Creole cuisine. The staff at this heritage villa in Pondicherry is local and helpful. Ravi, the manager is usually around till evening and will help with any requests. It's green around, homestay in Pondicherry
Haven of Tranquility , Pondicherry
Pondicherry
INTRODUCTION Everything about Haven of Tranquility villa is unusual and unique.  It was conceived as a place of retreat, beauty and tranquility.  Jyoti and Kakoli, who own and manage this luxury bed and breakfast in Pondicherry met and became friends at the Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry. When a rare opportunity to restore a 150 year old French villa in Ville Blanche or “White Town” of Pondicherry, came their way, they took on the task. And what a mighty task it turned out to be! It took three years of painstaking work with the help of INTACH, a conservation trust to make the beautiful space it is today. They decided to open up the house for others, converting it into a luxury b&b. Kakoli is in Pondicherry for most of the year while Jyoti visits when she can get away from her Trust, which works towards empowering rural women. ROOMS As you walk through the huge wooden doors that separate the villa from the street, it is like stepping into a secret place. You walk into a large courtyard with tall trees providing dappled shade. This luxury bed and breakfast in Pondicherry has two wings, the new and the old. Age-old techniques and artisanal fittings have been meticulously used in the new wing, making it a seamless transition. There are eight rooms across the villa. Each one is unique in size, layout and furnishing. It is best to check with us which one will suit you. All the rooms and the passages have cool to the touch red-oxide floors. The rooms in this luxury bed and breakfast in Pondicherry are furnished with restored antiques. The bathrooms are new but minimal with gorgeous textured walls and modern fittings. There is a large dining room with double French windows opening out to the courtyard. There is usually a scene of lively conversation in the mornings when breakfast is served at the communal table. You could also take your breakfast out or have a cup of tea on the benches and small tables scattered around the courtyard. This Luxury Bed & Breakfast in Pondicherry has a separate area on the second floor for yoga, sunbathing and massages on request. Near the entrance, is a boutique where designer garments made by rural women are sold. The proceeds go towards the Trust mentioned earlier. SERVICE In order to maintain serenity and enable the creative work of guests who are writers or artists, this luxury B&B in Pondicherry has put in place clear guidelines. Children are not allowed as they feel this is not a suitable place for them to enjoy a holiday. There is no television and they request guests to keep mobiles on low or “vibrate” mode. A tasty breakfast with fruits, toast, cereal and eggs or an Indian breakfast item is served between 8.30 -9.30 am. Tea and coffee can be made in the dining room at any time at no additional charge. They do not have a restaurant or provide other meals. Guests are asked to be sensitive to the delicate nature of the heritage structure and the “green” principles dear to the owners’ hearts. To come back to the personal, as I stood under the cool shower in my beautiful bathroom, I caught a hint of the scent of rain soaked earth along with that of frangipani blossoms. I looked up to the heavens in gratitude for the privilege of staying at this luxury bed and breakfast in Pondicherry and in that instant I understood why it was named so.
