River view from homestay in Coorg
Woodrose, Coorg
Coorg
INTRODUCTION Though it is easy to assume that Sumanth and Vasanthi are your hosts, make no mistake, it is Casper who is in charge. He runs ahead to see if this plantationstay in Coorg is in order, he is around at mealtimes to check on the food and generally keeps a benign eye on everything. A Golden Retriever host is only one of the charming aspects of Woodrose, a beautiful plantation stay in Coorg near Ponnampet. A koi pond with a tinkling bell to call the fish for food provides endless amusement too. It had been Sumanth and Vasanthi Rao’s dream to finally settle down in a Coorg estate. When they got a good offer for their thriving interior design business, they decided to take the plunge and move out from Bangalore to Coorg. They started a coffee estate from scratch on the uncleared, almost jungle-like piece of land that they bought. While they were setting up, the neighbours nicknamed Sumanth “mad-man” because they couldn’t believe it was possible to grow coffee there. Today it is 20 acres of well-run, profitable coffee plantation. ROOMS The main house, where the owners stay is a bright and spacious home with a large open plan kitchen and two sit-outs. Just a minute’s walk away, twin cottages have been constructed specially for guests. The cottages, Oak and Cedar are beautifully furnished with warm earthy tones, dark furniture and stone fireplaces. Each cottage has a covered porch, a spacious bedroom and a contemporary bathroom. All meals are taken at the airy dining room in the main house.  A gazebo with seating has been built near the fish pond for guests to relax, read or chat. A bonfire area has also been created for guests. SERVICE Food is a passion with both Sumanth and Vasanthi. She makes delectable desserts while he is a whiz with meat and pork dishes. But what makes this plantation stay in Coorg extraordinary is the affection and hospitality inherent in the hosts. You feel like their personal guests rather than customers and it makes the farewells very tough. LOCATION Woodrose- the most amazing plantation stay in Coorg is about half-hour away from the nearest big town, Gonikoppal. It is enroute to the Nagarhole Wildlife sanctuary. The estate is 20 acres and they grow Robusta coffee crop along with pepper. A large pond was dug for the water requirements, which Sumanth has also stocked with fish. Watching the green from verandah, homestay in Coorg
Coffee Heaven, Coorg
Coorg
INTRODUCTION Think of a place where you go to renew your soul, a place where you re-discover your life. Add pristine green hills and birdsong, cool, pure air, friendly hospitality and then you get to Coffee Heaven! This plantation stay in Coorg is on a coffee estate near Ammathi, it has a special place in my heart as the idea of Seek & Hide was born there. Generations of Micky Kalappa’s family have lived and farmed in this area but he was amongst the first to propagate the idea of plantation stay in Coorg. A stream on three sides surrounds this plantation stay, with alluvial sand deposits forming the land in between. ROOMS Started about 10 years ago with two cottages, Coffee Heaven now has four cottages. Each cottage has a bedroom, bathroom and verandah. The Timber Cottages have enclosed verandahs while the Coffee Cottages have open verandahs. The high ceilings with terracotta tiled roofs give it a spacious feel. Two of the cottages have twin beds while the other two are doubles. The cottages have been built simply to blend in with the surroundings. But they are comfortable and cozy with simple wooden furniture and warm colours. The bathrooms are modern and are supplied with hot water from the wood-fire fueled boiler. Three thatched gazebos near the cottages are used to serve meals while tea and coffee can be served at the cottage. Hammocks can be put up on request. SERVICE Food is a reason on its own for meat lovers to visit Coorg. Pork, wild mushroom and tender bamboo are stars of the cuisine in this plantation stay in Coorg. Rice-powder based breads are staples with meat or vegetable curries. Sapna, Micky’s wife is an outstanding cook and is also willing to customize food according to guests preferences. The hosts along with their two children and Micky’s parents live in the main house a couple of minutes away. Shy Vasu helps in serving the food and cleaning the cottages. Although the details are important, it is Sapna and Micky who are at the core of the beauty of Coffee Heaven. Their unpretentious, warm and gracious hospitality make this plantation stay in Coorg a place that you long to return every time you go away.
