The Garden pool villa is similar in layout and furnishing plus a private garden area and a plunge pool. The Deluxe pool villa has three sections, the bedroom, the living area and a slightly larger private pool. The bathroom is indeed a gorgeous surprise. Partly open-air in the traditional Kerala style, the shower, wash basin and toilet area are sheltered with a thatched cover. INTRODUCTION If you have never believed in love at first sight, you will do now. Your first glimpse of the Heritage Villa by the River from the boat and you will be love struck. An old Kerala ‘tharavad’ dating back to 150 years will take you to a haven of tranquility amidst the beautiful lagoons of the Kerala backwaters. The original architectural features, the intricate woodwork, the deep red oxide floors, the thick solid doors and your hosts, together they make you feel at home instantly. You could spend days at this river view heritage villa in Alleppey, walking through the spice garden, swimming in the meandering river Pamba, casting a line in the owner’s fish-farm or lazing through the criss-cross canals. A long walk will take you through the little town to the temple or you could take the ferry and hop across to Alleppey. And if you have rest and relaxation in mind, you could simply laze in a hammock and watch the enthralling colors of the setting sun. ROOMS There are 5 rooms for guests, each having all that is needed for a comfortable stay at this river view heritage villa in Alleppey. The open to shower bathrooms are tastefully done, well equipped with all modern facilities yet retaining the flavour of old Kerala. From amongst the five, you have a choice of three kinds of accommodation at this gorgeous heritage villa. The Heritage rooms, the Granary Mini Suite and the Cottage. You will love how the old granary has been thoughtfully turned into a lavish suite. The Cottage however is a much newer structure and is quite evident from the look and feel of it. In the old days, rooms did not have many windows to keep them cool and for security reasons. Though the rooms have not been changed much, necessary touches like air-conditioning and fans have been added. No two rooms are exactly the same at this river view heritage villa in Alleppey. Each room has its unique details – be it the antiques pieces for décor or the authentically restored furniture or even the original wooden bolts of the door. SERVICE Vinod is a congenial and knowlegeable host while his mother makes sure that the house runs smoothly. Sam is Vinod’s right hand man to ensure that guests feel at home. Right from picking you up from the mainland to taking you around the farm, he is very helpful. There is a beautiful outdoor dining arrangement with a view of the gorgeous green and breathtaking blue of the Kerala backwaters. The meals at this river view heritage villa in Alleppey definitely deserve special mention. The menu is always elaborate and features Kerala favourites like appam and stew and lesser known dishes like banana kalan, a mild curry using ripe bananas.  A 150 year old heritage bungalow on the banks of a river with delicious homemade meals.

Village Manor Home, Alleppey
Alleppey
INTRODUCTION The simplest way to travel back in time is to walk into the gracious house of Anthony and Rema Tharakan in Alleppey, here you go back a hundred years into the aristocratic lifestyle of the Syrian Christian landowners of Kerala. The Parayil Tharakan family that started with three brothers fleeing an invasion in their original homeland at Pazhur, near Trichur gradually became the most prominent family in the area. The word “Parayi” itself has come to mean in Malayalam “very rich man” or “a high-handed manner”. Set on the banks of the Vembanad Lake between Alappuzha and Kochi is the Village Manor Home. As you drive through the little village to the property, it feels like time has stopped. The effect is magnified when you see the grand Kerala house untouched by outward modernity. It continues to be a large working farm with coconuts, pepper, vanilla, cashew nuts and nutmeg apart from vegetables and fruits for the house. There is also a large prawn farm towards one end of the property. Anthony will gladly provide you with a personally written note on the architecture of the house or tell you hoary family tales. They are happy to show ancient building plans on dried palm leaves and family papers to those with an interest. If you are not so inclined, this luxury bed and breakfast in Alleppey is also an excellent place to unwind with a book, potter about on the farm, paddle the canoe or just lie back on the verandah chairs. Rema will ensure that you are well fed with delicious Kerala repasts. The hospitality at this luxury bed and breakfast in Alleppey is from a gentler, more genuine era and the evenings are convivial with guests swapping stories. ROOMS This 120 year old home at Alleppey with two floors has preserved its original design elements be it the traditional Padipura entrance in a straight line with the wooden granary at the front of the house or the original four poster bed in the master bedroom with wooden steps to get on to it. There are ten rooms out of which six are available to guests. Some rooms have four poster beds while one is a family room with an additional living area. There is also a quaint cottage made out of the old granary. If booked in advance, two rooms at the entrance to the main house are suitable for wheelchair bound guests and meals can be served in these rooms. An upstairs verandah and a couple of cozy nooks are perfect for lounging. None of the rooms have air conditioning as the family wants to preserve the house in its original condition. The cross ventilation and ceiling fans help air circulation and most guests are fine with it though the summer months can get humid. The biggest concession to change is the modern bathrooms with bathtubs, a rarity in Kerala. SERVICE Guests are welcomed with a refreshing ginger lime drink. Breakfasts are a mix of continental with a local highlight. Lunch and dinner are essentially drawn from Kerala cuisine with vegetarian and meat or fish dishes accompanied by rice and Indian breads.120 yearr heritage home of aristocratic Syrian Christians of Kerala, with original design elements. Beach loungers in front of the Palm Beach Villa
Luxe Beach Villas, Alleppey
Alleppey
INTRODUCTION Luxe Beach Villas are a gorgeous cluster of boutique beach cottages run by a European couple, Olga and Rupert. Before settling on Marari beach they spent three months combing the Indian coastline to find the best beach. Marari beach near Alappuzha was their unanimous choice. The dazzling white sand, clear waters and a freshwater pond in the middle of the beach will convince you too. If you are looking for a beach villa in Alleppey, you will love the choices and facilities here. ROOMS They have three villas now but will soon have more in the area. Rupert has designed the villas at Alleppey to be private, luxurious and intimate spaces that prompt the guest to unwind. One is a rebuilt traditional wooden cottage with a private garden while the other has a modern feel with a small private pool and a barbeque. Both have air-conditioning and open to the sky bathrooms. They are also designed to be independent villas with a tiny kitchenette each. But with a chef and butler on tap, it’s no surprise that most guests tend to take the full service option. There is a small lawn outside the two Alleppey villas but the beach is where guests tend to be when they are not in the villas. Their third Alleppey villa is right on the beach with a sea view. This one has two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and a large open lounge area with a bar and dining area. It also has a fully equipped kitchen. SERVICE Rupert and Olga are eager for their guests to experience Kerala in an unfiltered way. They have designed local tours around the area and have trained a few English speaking local rickshaw (tuk-tuk) drivers. These tours are a unique and safe way to experience Alappuzha with all your senses. Despite no background in the hospitality business, what stands out is the attention to detail, thoughtfulness seen in small touches and the sheer enthusiasm to share information and create a memorable holiday for guests at Alleppey. They encourage guests to try the local cuisine by making it a highlight of their menu and can even arrange a multi-course festival lunch on a banana leaf plate if requested in advance. A selection of European food is also on the menu. Private cooking classes in the villas are a popular option with guests. Book a beach villa in Alleppey!
