Inside the suite at the hotel in Pondicherry
Governor’s Heritage Villa, Pondicherry
Pondicherry
Creole and Continental cuisine delight visitors at this 250 year villa in the French Quarter of Puducherry INTRODUCTION If Governor's Heritage Villa in Pondicherry were a person, the first thing you would say on meeting him/her is “ you just don’t look your age”. It’s hard to believe that a 250 year or older villa can still look this good. Its thick walls stand testament to its history starting life as part of the erstwhile French Governor’s complex, then as a private home and now as a small hotel. A group of four Pondicherry businessmen bought this villa in the heart of the French Quarter for sentimental reasons and decided to run it as a boutique hotel so that it can continue to be maintained in its original condition. ROOM This heritage villa in Pondicherry was built in the traditional Pondicherry style of a central walled courtyard with the house built around it. The first impression on entrance is that of high doorways painted in a delicious blue-green colour in a beautiful contrast to the yellow shaded walls. With only ten rooms, this heritage villa in Pondicherry has a peaceful vibe despite being in the centre of the tourist area. The thick walls help in keeping out noise. The rooms are of varying sizes and shapes. Spacious with high ceilings and four-poster beds, the two suite rooms are the best choice. The deluxe rooms are regular while the two standard rooms are best for single occupancy or a cosy twosome. The bathrooms in this heritage villa in Pondicherry have modern amenities. A sunny restaurant that also serves as the breakfast room is on a mezzanine level from the courtyard. Adjacent to the restaurant, there is a tiny bar with just a few tables. Although not consistent with the heritage character, a favourite place for guests is the wooden deck on stilts in the courtyard. SERVICE Breakfast is continental with choice of eggs, toast, juice and coffee/tea. The restaurant in this heritage villa in Pondicherry offers a choice of Indian, French and Pondicherry Creole cuisine. The staff at this heritage villa in Pondicherry is local and helpful. Ravi, the manager is usually around till evening and will help with any requests. View of Chittoor Kottaram
Chittoor Kottaram, Kochi
Kochi
INTRODUCTION “Once upon a time there was a king…” Now you can be part of that story as the royal family of Cochin has opened one of their homes to guests. Long ago, another powerful king stopped the Raja of Cochin from visiting the famed Guruvayoor temple. The Raja vowed to have a better Krishna temple in his own kingdom and hence the Cheranalloor Krishna temple was built. The Chittoor Kottaram was created as a royal retreat near it. Today it accommodates only one group at a time so that it remains a majestic experience. The hour-long journey over water from Fort Kochi in a private motorboat to this amazing Kochi villa is a great way to start the experience. ROOMS The Kottaram (meaning palace) is maintained so well that it is hard to believe that it is 400 years old. It is a lovely and large Kochi villa with extensive wooden verandahs serving as communal spaces. The one in front looks over the lagoon while the one at the back looks over the inner courtyard and lawn. Though it is built over a large area, this Kochi villa  has only three bedrooms. The two smaller ones are on the ground floor while the royal bedroom on the first floor has a separate living area and a bedroom. One of the bedrooms downstairs is a double while other two have the original twin four poster beds. The en-suite bathrooms are modern and one even has a selection of books in it. The royal pond with a long row of covered steps leading to it is soon to become the swimming pool. There is a private Ayurveda massage area in the grounds and two complimentary massages are available to guests. Every evening, a performance of traditional art is staged in the garden. It is quite magical to experience a private Kathakali or Mohiniattam performance at close quarters. SERVICE The kitchen and dining area are next to each other and guests are welcome to watch preparation of food. Traditional Kerala food is served on banana leaves for lunch and North Indian food for dinner. Ideally guests should stay for 2 nights to ensure that they have tasted the best of Kerala vegetarian cuisine. Guests are also invited to join the morning market visit for fresh vegetables and fruits. A sunset boat ride with tea and snacks is part of the experience too.  The manager and the staff here at this Kochi villa are tireless in ensuring that the guests relax and enjoy the royal experience.Royal retreat of the Raja of Cochin, this magnificent vintage villa provides grandeur on the backwaters.

Kerala Offbeat Kollengode palace
Ayurveda Spa Palace, Palakkad
Kerala Offbeat
INTRODUCTION Luxury comes in many forms but this is one of the more unusual ones. A beautiful century old palace with every detail customized for the guests who have to get up at 5.30 am, are not allowed to wear their own clothes or step outside the palace grounds and follow a strict Kerala ayurveda regimen. Ayurveda Spa Palace, near Palakkad has been an unusual place right from the start. It was born out of an act of rebellion. Tired of fights with her uncle-the King, a young princess of the Vengunad dynasty in Palakkad decided to set up an independent household. By all accounts, she was a determined young lady and she did succeed in setting it up though it was unheard of in those days. The women-only palace flourished and patronized artists, dancers, musicians and writers. In later years, the Palace passed onto a Prince who added a new wing as he had many European friends who came visiting. SPA AND WELLNESS Today the palace is a wellness spa, a Kerala ayurveda hub with a great degree of personalization. The Kerala ayurveda treatments are targeted towards anti-ageing, anti-stress and general rejuvenation. As soon as the guests arrive, they are given pure cotton clothes and asked to keep away their leather footwear, mobiles and laptops. After a thorough discussion and examination, the Ayurvedic doctor decides on the vegetables, spices and herbs for each guest. These guidelines are passed on to the head chef who prepares a personalized menu that has to be approved by the doctor. Each guest eats a different meal . Even the herbal water is different for each guest. Similarly, the medicines, massages and other treatments are also personalized. The minimum stay is 14 days during which the guest is requested to stay within the palace grounds. The only common aspect for guests is the early wake-up and bed times, yoga sessions and evening cultural programs. ROOMS The palace has 18 suites and is set in 7 acres of greenery. The large suites are of two styles – the older heritage style and the newer colonial style. A striking feature of the old wing is the tiled floors with different patterns in each room. The suites are aesthetically furnished with large comfortable beds, antiques and large modern bathrooms. All the suites open onto a common verandah. Apart from the airy verandah, there is a library, two yoga areas and two ponds. Many of the Kerala ayurveda medicines are made on site with herbs from the gardens. Guests are welcome to watch the process. The staff is very friendly and open to questions and requests. SERVICE Food is prepared in a traditional kitchen using organic vegetables and a minimum of oil and spices.  Vessels made of brass, copper and even stone are used for preparation of food. Although simple vegetarian fare, the food is tasty. When guests leave, they are given recipes from their personalised menu on a CD with the hope they would continue with the Kerala ayurveda treatment they were receiving here. Although it may sound like a tough Kerala ayurveda regimen, most guests settle in by the third day and enjoy the break from modern life. Many of them come back after a year or two for repeat Kerala ayurveda treatments as the mental and physical wellbeing at the end of such treatment is unbeatable.Experience Ayurvedic wellness programs, relish organic vegetarian food in a redone century old palace.

Beach loungers in front of the Palm Beach Villa
Luxe Beach Villas, Alleppey
Alleppey
INTRODUCTION Luxe Beach Villas are a gorgeous cluster of boutique beach cottages run by a European couple, Olga and Rupert. Before settling on Marari beach they spent three months combing the Indian coastline to find the best beach. Marari beach near Alappuzha was their unanimous choice. The dazzling white sand, clear waters and a freshwater pond in the middle of the beach will convince you too. If you are looking for a beach villa in Alleppey, you will love the choices and facilities here. ROOMS They have three villas now but will soon have more in the area. Rupert has designed the villas at Alleppey to be private, luxurious and intimate spaces that prompt the guest to unwind. One is a rebuilt traditional wooden cottage with a private garden while the other has a modern feel with a small private pool and a barbeque. Both have air-conditioning and open to the sky bathrooms. They are also designed to be independent villas with a tiny kitchenette each. But with a chef and butler on tap, it’s no surprise that most guests tend to take the full service option. There is a small lawn outside the two Alleppey villas but the beach is where guests tend to be when they are not in the villas. Their third Alleppey villa is right on the beach with a sea view. This one has two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and a large open lounge area with a bar and dining area. It also has a fully equipped kitchen. SERVICE Rupert and Olga are eager for their guests to experience Kerala in an unfiltered way. They have designed local tours around the area and have trained a few English speaking local rickshaw (tuk-tuk) drivers. These tours are a unique and safe way to experience Alappuzha with all your senses. Despite no background in the hospitality business, what stands out is the attention to detail, thoughtfulness seen in small touches and the sheer enthusiasm to share information and create a memorable holiday for guests at Alleppey. They encourage guests to try the local cuisine by making it a highlight of their menu and can even arrange a multi-course festival lunch on a banana leaf plate if requested in advance. A selection of European food is also on the menu. Private cooking classes in the villas are a popular option with guests. Book a beach villa in Alleppey!
