Inside the suite at the hotel in Pondicherry
Governor’s Heritage Villa, Pondicherry
Pondicherry
Creole and Continental cuisine delight visitors at this 250 year villa in the French Quarter of Puducherry INTRODUCTION If Governor's Heritage Villa in Pondicherry were a person, the first thing you would say on meeting him/her is “ you just don’t look your age”. It’s hard to believe that a 250 year or older villa can still look this good. Its thick walls stand testament to its history starting life as part of the erstwhile French Governor’s complex, then as a private home and now as a small hotel. A group of four Pondicherry businessmen bought this villa in the heart of the French Quarter for sentimental reasons and decided to run it as a boutique hotel so that it can continue to be maintained in its original condition. ROOM This heritage villa in Pondicherry was built in the traditional Pondicherry style of a central walled courtyard with the house built around it. The first impression on entrance is that of high doorways painted in a delicious blue-green colour in a beautiful contrast to the yellow shaded walls. With only ten rooms, this heritage villa in Pondicherry has a peaceful vibe despite being in the centre of the tourist area. The thick walls help in keeping out noise. The rooms are of varying sizes and shapes. Spacious with high ceilings and four-poster beds, the two suite rooms are the best choice. The deluxe rooms are regular while the two standard rooms are best for single occupancy or a cosy twosome. The bathrooms in this heritage villa in Pondicherry have modern amenities. A sunny restaurant that also serves as the breakfast room is on a mezzanine level from the courtyard. Adjacent to the restaurant, there is a tiny bar with just a few tables. Although not consistent with the heritage character, a favourite place for guests is the wooden deck on stilts in the courtyard. SERVICE Breakfast is continental with choice of eggs, toast, juice and coffee/tea. The restaurant in this heritage villa in Pondicherry offers a choice of Indian, French and Pondicherry Creole cuisine. The staff at this heritage villa in Pondicherry is local and helpful. Ravi, the manager is usually around till evening and will help with any requests. Courtyard Hotel, Fort Kochi
Kochi
INTRODUCTION “Tread lightly as you are walking on history” says a sign in this marvelous heritage hotel in Fort Kochi. You may end up holding your breath in awe as you walk up the original wooden staircase. The dwindling number of Cochin Jews is a tale that tugs at the heart of every visitor to Fort Kochi. The first recorded migration from Israel to Kerala was in 70 AD after the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem by the Romans. After another migration in the 16th century, this time from Europe, they felt their strong economic presence here. In present times, the Jewish community has come down to a handful of older people who live around the Paradesi Synagogue. Lily Koder was an unmarried daughter of the prominent Jewish Koder family. She lived alone in a palatial home in the centre of town and died in the Nineties. Her abandoned home was restored as an extravagant hotel in Kochi with great attention to detail by Jacob and Rose using their Swiss hospitality training. If you can persuade the efficient Rose to take a break from her schedule, you will be rewarded with a wealth of detail about the house and original features. ROOMS This three-storey heritage hotel in Fort Kochi is built around the courtyard, hidden from the street, with a verandah on each floor overlooking it. This hotel in Kochi has eight unique rooms out of which three were built recently but in line with the original design. The older rooms are larger and have more character though all of them are furnished equally well. Jacob has a keen eye for beauty and collects antiques and art. Luckily for guests, he has generously put his collection to good use in the hotel. Air-conditioning is present in all rooms while five rooms have televisions. The bathrooms are new as there was just one for the whole house in Lily Koder’s time. Some of the bathrooms even have wooden floors. The sunlit courtyard which doubles as the restaurant has tables scattered across it. A cheery café facing the street is the latest initiative of the hotel and serves coffee and short eats. SERVICE The restaurant focuses on European cuisine with a sprinkling of Kerala favourites. The seafood is absolutely fresh as the beach with its iconic Chinese fishing nets is only a few minutes away. Rose personally plans the menu and trains the chefs. A small raised platform in the courtyard often hosts a cultural program in the evening to accompany the delightful dinner. French Style Luxury B&B, Pondicherry
Pondicherry
Spacious rooms with modern baths in a beautiful heritage villa, part of the French Quarter of Puducherry. INTRODUCTION French Style Luxury B&B is a certified discovery. Here’s why. It’s a heritage French villa in Pondicherry with beautiful furnishings in a great location with a lovely helpful host. The icing on the cake is the down to earth price at this heritage French villa in Pondicherry. The villa has been in the family of the first Chief Minister of independent Pondicherry for four generations. A quirky feature of this heritage French villa in Pondicherry is the numerous traditional artifacts of the region displayed around the house. The lady of the house loves them and can’t resist adding them to her collection when she chances on pretty pieces. Mr. Bascarene, the current owner is running it as a B&B till he can pass it on to his children. He is a quiet, soft-spoken person but extremely thoughtful and helpful beyond the call of duty. ROOMS On a quiet leafy street of the French Quarter, this heritage French villa in Pondicherry is well maintained and furnished with lovely furniture and linen making each room a very attractive space. Originally a single storey house, the first floor has been added in keeping with its heritage character. The entrance area of the house has a tiny foyer with an antique roll top desk. This takes you to a living room and the two bedrooms that lead off it. The living room has plenty of seating and is a comfortable place to relax. A staircase takes you up to the breakfast room, another large area with large French windows letting in sunshine. There are three small café-style tables with chairs. Two doors from this area lead to two guest rooms. There’s a fifth room on the terrace, which is perfect for single occupants or long stay guests. All the rooms have ensuite bathrooms that have been renovated with modern amenities. SERVICE Breakfast is served in the continental style and is delicious with freshly baked croissants, fresh juice, fruit platter and eggs. The owner is usually around to greet guests when they arrive and will help with information to plan sightseeing or shopping. G-49 B&B-Delhi-Nizamuddin
Cozy B&B, Nizamuddin
Delhi
INTRODUCTION & LOCATION This small Bed and Breakfast in New Delhi sits unassumingly in a quiet leafy corner of Nizamuddin West. But it remains a favourite of travellers in search of a good value place in South Delhi close to many of the major attractions of the town and this Cozy B&B fits the bill to a T. This bed and breakfast in New Delhi is only 10-15 minutes by foot to Nizamuddin Dargah and Humayun’s tomb and not very far from other Delhi attractions like India Gate and Red Fort. ROOMS This Cozy B&B has only six rooms with two smaller premium rooms and the four larger deluxe rooms. The difference between the room categories is their size. Our favourites were the deluxe rooms. They have a Zen feel with their simplicity and the greenery framing the large windows. One of them even has a cosy balcony to relax with a cup of chai. The rooms and bathrooms are simply furnished and kept very clean. All rooms are air-conditioned. If you are a very light sleeper then you should ask for the rooms away from the road. SERVICE The rooms are on the first floor while the diminutive reception area and mini-gym with a couple of lonely-looking machines are on the ground floor. A bright and airy breakfast room cum lounge area occupies the ground floor too. Breakfast here at this bed and breakfast in New Delhi is standard Continental with fruit, eggs or an Indian item, toast and tea/coffee. The young and cheerful manager, Amarjit is very friendly with plenty of tips to share. He can help in arranging for taxis and could be your perfect city guide. A peaceful and perfect stay right at the heart of the busy town yet away from the city chaos- that would be the Cozy B&B, Nizamuddin for you in a nutshell.Charming and good value B&B in a centrally located part of South Delhi
