About the Trip

A land infused with cultural wonders, historical vortexes and perhaps the best South Indian food you can imagine, we dip into weaves from India’s Great South- an out of the box Tamil Nadu tour. On this Tamil Nadu tour we go beyond the architectural brilliance and plunge into exploring the rich textile industry.

Journey Begins

We start this unique Tamil Nadu tour from the capital city Chennai, at Kalakshetra (a holy place for arts) for our first look into Kalamkari textiles and handloom weaving at their Handloom Weaving Centre. Interactions with Qualamkars on hand painting and hand looms of the Kanchipuram tradition and conversations with our textile expert brings us to an introduction to the process, people and fabrics we can expect to interact with on our textile journey.

Stroll through the display of traditional Palmyra basketry (Kottans) and Kandanghi saris, rich in yellow, red and black with vivid thick zari strips on our visit to the MRmRm Cultural Foundation, on of the highlights of our Tamil Nadu tour. A narration from Visalakshi, the grand old dame of Chettinad , reads us into the traditional Khadi weaves hand-spun to perfection and hand-made Athangudi tiles from Chettinad. We marvel at the hand made Athangudi tiles that grace the Chettinad Palace before bringing ourselves back to the threads that brought us here - the famous silk saris of Kanchipuram.

Kanchipuram (also known as Kanchivaram) saris are woven with threads dipped in silver and gold , making it one of the most valuable Indian saris available. The Konrad Sari remains the tradition hallmark of Kanchipuram textiles and owes much of its revival to Kalakshetra. As we head from Kancheepuram to Tranquebar for the night , with our textile expert Kausi, we dive into the historical relevance of , and various traditional interpretations on the variety of South Indian textiles, what they mean and how they are used in contemporary urban lifestyles.

After a restful night in Tranquebar, we head to Chettinad where the famed Kandanghi saris are woven in bold colours and checks, woven with the extra weft which is a dying art today.

From here onwards to the Gandhigram Trust in Gandhigram, a peaceful town in the district of Dindigul where we come across a Khadi spinning and weaving centre set up by none other than Gandhiji who spent a significant amount of time on the charkha and thus it is no surprise that Khadi spinning (cotton spun fabric seasoned for summer wear) rests in his namesake. Historical context also explored in this Tamil Nadu tour.

Traipse through the local markets in Madurai, famous for its Chungadi saris originally made using a tie dye technique brought from Saurashtra in Kutch. This loops us into how the techniques from the North are weaving into the textiles from the South.

An experience infused with remarkable bounds - Tamil Nadu’s diverse world of textiles, their humility, spiritual residence and pathways to the past may give you another perspective into why the South has it best… Memories of this Tamil Nadu trip, the shimmers, the glitters, the colors will stay afresh in the memory for a long time.

This Expert Designed Experience has been developed by our experiential travel partner, Breakaway.

The first night will be at a Bed & Breakfast in South Chennai. The second night at a heritage home in Tranquebar followed by a night stay at charming mansion in Kanadukathan, near Chettinad  on the third night with your trip ending at comfortable stay in a rural Indian setting near Madurai.
