A 150 year old villa complete with antique furniture in the French Quarter of Pondicherry.
Everything about Haven of Tranquility villa is unusual and unique. It was conceived as a place of retreat, beauty and tranquility. Jyoti and Kakoli, who own and manage this luxury bed and breakfast in Pondicherry met and became friends at the Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry. When a rare opportunity to restore a 150 year old French villa in Ville Blanche or “White Town” of Pondicherry, came their way, they took on the task. And what a mighty task it turned out to be! It took three years of painstaking work with the help of INTACH, a conservation trust to make the beautiful space it is today. They decided to open up the house for others, converting it into a luxury b&b. Kakoli is in Pondicherry for most of the year while Jyoti visits when she can get away from her Trust, which works towards empowering rural women.
As you walk through the huge wooden doors that separate the villa from the street, it is like stepping into a secret place. You walk into a large courtyard with tall trees providing dappled shade. This luxury bed and breakfast in Pondicherry has two wings, the new and the old. Age-old techniques and artisanal fittings have been meticulously used in the new wing, making it a seamless transition. There are eight rooms across the villa. Each one is unique in size, layout and furnishing. It is best to check with us which one will suit you.
All the rooms and the passages have cool to the touch red-oxide floors. The rooms in this luxury bed and breakfast in Pondicherry are furnished with restored antiques. The bathrooms are new but minimal with gorgeous textured walls and modern fittings. There is a large dining room with double French windows opening out to the courtyard. There is usually a scene of lively conversation in the mornings when breakfast is served at the communal table. You could also take your breakfast out or have a cup of tea on the benches and small tables scattered around the courtyard.
This Luxury Bed & Breakfast in Pondicherry has a separate area on the second floor for yoga, sunbathing and massages on request. Near the entrance, is a boutique where designer garments made by rural women are sold. The proceeds go towards the Trust mentioned earlier.
In order to maintain serenity and enable the creative work of guests who are writers or artists, this luxury B&B in Pondicherry has put in place clear guidelines. Children are not allowed as they feel this is not a suitable place for them to enjoy a holiday. There is no television and they request guests to keep mobiles on low or “vibrate” mode.
A tasty breakfast with fruits, toast, cereal and eggs or an Indian breakfast item is served between 8.30 -9.30 am. Tea and coffee can be made in the dining room at any time at no additional charge. They do not have a restaurant or provide other meals. Guests are asked to be sensitive to the delicate nature of the heritage structure and the “green” principles dear to the owners’ hearts.
To come back to the personal, as I stood under the cool shower in my beautiful bathroom, I caught a hint of the scent of rain soaked earth along with that of frangipani blossoms. I looked up to the heavens in gratitude for the privilege of staying at this luxury bed and breakfast in Pondicherry and in that instant I understood why it was named so.
