Planning a fairy-tale wedding or a day to commemorate your marriage, the cherished partnership that has grown strong through the roller-coaster ride of life? Whether its wedding bells for the first time or renewing your vows, what better than to do it at a destination that celebrates life itself?

Planning one’s wedding or renewal vows can be exciting and exhilarating.  And if you choose to have the ceremony at an exotic, quaint, or romantic destination, it could just be the cherry on the cake.

India has many such destinations to offer- luxury beaches with sparkling water and shimmering sands, royal palaces that evoke a sense of timelessness, and monuments that are the very epitome of love.

We have picked the most romantic wedding destinations for you. Read on to know what makes these Top 5 Romantic Wedding Destinations in India ideal for your special day.

(1) Rajasthan: This desert state in North West India, dotted with a plethora of palaces and forts is the perfect destination for a classy, period theme. Katy Perry and Elizabeth Hurley are some of the celebrities who have tied the knot here. Couples can wed in ethnic Indian style with a priest to officiate the ceremony.  For a traditional touch, add on ceremonies like the Sangeet , a music ceremony where family and friends get together and sing wedding songs and Mehndi, a ceremony for the ladies to embellish their hands and feet with colored designs .

If opulence and grandeur is your thing, then Rajasthan has a host of cities to cater to your nuptial requisites. Udaipur, the city of lakes, has many gorgeous wedding venues, such as Devi Garh, a 18th century fort and palace, and the City Palace Complex. Jaipur, the pink city, boasts of venues such as the Jal Mahal Palace, situated in the middle of a lake, and the Samode Palace- a heritage venue nestled in the Aravalli Mountains. Jodhpur, the Blue City is also a great place to tie the knot. The magnificent Umaid Bhavan Palace, or the majestic Mehrangarh Fort are some of the grand venues on offer here.

For the stay, you could choose a Jaipur heritage mansion built for a royal wedding or a serene spa resort to pamper your beloved.

I think we have given more than enough reasons to justify why Rajasthan makes it to the list of most romantic wedding destinations in India.

(2)Goa: This evergreen tourist destination offers some dreamy beach locations.  For a sunset wedding, against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea, you could choose a venue on the pristine Morbor beach or on the serene Varca beach.

You could also rent a villa depending on the size of your entourage – from a compact villa apartment for a small group to a sprawling 11 bedroom luxury villa with private pool for a large gathering – there are many serene and unique accommodation options in Goa that befit the beauty of the occasion. Or if it’s just the two of you, get super romantic on a cliff top villa with panoramic sea views and infinity pool.

With such lovely options and endless beaches, no wonder Goa earns its place in the top romantic wedding destinations in India.

(3)Kerala: Fancy riding on an elephant to your wedding? Kerala is the place you need to be. God’s own country is the perfect setting for an idyllic picturesque wedding. From backwaters to beach weddings, there are a plethora of options. You could take your vows cruising on the backwaters of Alleppey or match the timelessness of your relationship by choosing to stay at a 300 year old Kerala mansion. If you love the hills, a plantation resort in Munnar would make an ideal wedding venue. You can opt for a traditional Keralite wedding ceremony, complete with food served on a banana leaf and a classical dance performance. Kerala may not be the first place that comes to the mind of a traveler when thinking of a romantic wedding destination, but its exotic locales and rich culture make it one of the best romantic wedding destinations in India.

(4)Agra:  When discussing the most romantic wedding destinations in India, how can one not think of Taj Mahal?

Agra is home to Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a monument dedicated to the Mughal empress Mumtaz Mahal by her husband Emperor Shah Jahan.  It couldn’t get more romantic than this; to tie the knot at this historical place, an epitome of everlasting and passionate love. There are many grand hotels and resorts in Agra that can arrange a fairy tale wedding for you.

Resorts like Barefoot at Havelock are a popular wedding venue in the Andamans Island.  The more adventurous can wed on a speedboat, or even while swimming with elephants in the sea!

It doesn’t take much to plan a destination wedding these days. Hotels, wedding planners and even tour operators can help you plan a destination wedding. Lester Melo, managing director of ‘weddings and dreams’ says an experienced planner can even put together a small wedding ceremony in a week’s time. Though he advices, if there are many guests and if an elaborate ceremony is on cards, it is better to plan many months in advance. He says that the approximate cost for a destination wedding with about 10 guests can range from 1 to 4 lakh rupees. You may have to book accommodations separately depending on the services offered by the wedding planner.

For lesser hassles, book a venue that is run as a hotel. “Most hotels and resorts have in-house wedding planners who eat breathe and sleep weddings”, he adds, who will take care of your every need right from arranging the wedding ceremony, to caterers, florists and decorators. International tour operators can also help book venues and plan weddings.

There is no dearth of exquisite locales in India for the most important day of your life. Saying ‘I do’ in style has never been easier. Just pack your bags, and head to India, you will be spoilt for choice and treated like royalty. Let the destination work its magic.
