Marriages are made in heaven but honeymoons need work, a lot of work to make it perfect. But the effort is worthwhile because you have only one shot at a perfect honeymoon. Today there’s no place that not accessible for your dream honeymoon providing you have the money and the right planner. But this would be a book, not a post if I covered every honeymoon destination on earth. So if you intend to spend your honeymoon in India, then this easy honeymoon guide is for you. I have chosen destinations according to the number of days and suggested the best things to do on a honeymoon.

2 to 3 days or a Mini-moon in Goa, Jaipur, Pondicherry

Like electronic devices and attention spans, honeymoons are shrinking too. There’s even a new name for it, mini-moon. So for couples that have only a weekend or 3 days, I suggest you choose a honeymoon destination that has an airport or is very close to it so that you don’t waste precious time driving to your hotel.

Honeymoon in India by the beach

Beach Honeymoon in Goa

Goa is a perennial favourite for its beautiful beaches, relaxed culture and variety of restaurants spanning fine dining to beach shacks. It attracts honeymooners from around the world. They get an unforgettable beach honeymoon at a fraction of the prices compared to other world-class beach destinations. If you are looking for fewer crowds, avoid the Baga-Calangute stretch. Either head north to Ashwem, Mandrem or south to Cavelossim, Patnem, Agonda. Carry our master list of the best Goa restaurants to ensure the best dining experiences.

Cultural Jaipur honeymoon

Jaipur is the other end of the spectrum from Goa. If Goa is all relaxed easygoing charm, then Jaipur is a showcase for royal hospitality. If you are looking for a honeymoon that is different from anything that you have ever experienced, then Jaipur is for you. A colourful mélange of elegant royal residences, crowded markets with handcrafted wares and old world hospitality; Jaipur is a cultural experience like no other. Spend a couple of days falling in love amidst Jaipur’s stunning palaces. Carry our Insider Guide to Jaipur’s shopping secrets to buy the best souvenirs and gifts. Stay at Samode Haveli for a royal honeymoon or at Tree Of Life  for an ultra romantic spa honeymoon. Leave it to seek&hide to plan the rest of the itinerary for an unforgettable honeymoon.

Romantic Pondicherry honeymoon

Pondicherry is the perfect place for a weekend getaway. A small town with a unique culture, the official name is Puducherry now but the old one continues to stick. The French quarter retains its wide streets with French names, wrought iron window grills, and mango-yellow painted gracious old houses. This quarter also houses chic boutiques and friendly restaurants serving world cuisines. A five course candlelit dinner with French cuisine, shopping for unique handcrafted items to furnish your new home, a day at Paradise beach; these are some of the romantic highlights of a honeymoon in Pondicherry. Here are more ideas on things to do in Pondicherry and the best places to stay in Pondicherry.

5 to 7 days – Honeymoon in Munnar, Coorg, Kumarakom

With at least 5 days in hand, you can afford to choose a honeymoon destination that involves some travel from the airport.

 Venice style honeymoon in Kumarakom

Venice style honeymoon in India

Kumarakom is very different from the rest of India. An area double the size of Venice but similarly crisscrossed with canals, the pace of life is slow. It doesn’t take time for you to slip into a relaxed holiday mood, just what you need after all those months of planning the perfect wedding. Gazing into the deep blue lake from your cottage, watching the sunset together from a private boat or cruising along the narrow canals on a houseboat, all designed to get both of you in that romantic mood. You could also learn to cook Kerala seafood specialities at your resort or take a morning yoga class together. And of course, Ayurveda spa treatments shouldn’t be missed.

Munnar honeymoon amidst rolling green hills

From the backwaters and up the hills, we’re in Munnar now. This is a classic honeymoon spot. Green valleys, cool weather, fireplaces and lots of cuddling, that’s a honeymoon Munnar style. There is no dearth of beautiful views to gaze at in Munnar so it makes a picture perfect backdrop to your honeymoon photos. Choose a hotel or a homestay that has gorgeous sunrise or sunset views and a fireplace in your room. Go for a trek amidst the rolling tea estates, see the endangered Nilgiri Tahr at the Rajamalai Wildlife park, take a drive to Marayoor, am ancient village with sandalwood groves. Sample hot chocolate, freshly brewed tea, fudge, mulberry jam and other delicacies typical to a hill-station in India.

Coorg honeymoon on a coffee estate

Coorg or Kodagu is an unusual destination is many ways. Consider the people. They have features that are not indigenous to the Southern part of India, they do not conform to the usual forms of Hindu worship and they are famous for their martial nature. Another unusual aspect is the largest Tibetan settlement in India, far from the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala. So if you are looking for an unusual holiday, Coorg fits it to the tee. But Coorg also makes a perfect honeymoon spot. Many of the lovely homestays and resorts are housed in coffee estates. Staying in pretty cottages amidst greenery, waking up to plantation fresh coffee and listening to bird song will set the tone for a relaxed romantic holiday in Coorg. Once you are properly awake, go for a guided trek or just a lazy walk. Visit the numerous waterfalls, big and small, that dot this slice of good earth, drive to the Bylakuppe Monastery to offer a prayer for a happy married life and do a day safari at the Nagarhole Wildlife sanctuary.

9 to 14 days – Kerala in two ways, Golden Triangle

Now that’s a good amount of time to escape into a world inhabited by just two. You could combine two to three destinations for a long India honeymoon.

Backwaters honeymoon in Kerala

Kochi – Alleppey – Kumarakom

Start with Fort Kochi, one of the oldest trading cities in the world. Do a guided heritage walk around Fort Kochi and end with a Kathakali show. Stay in a cool boutique hotel, shop unusual pieces for your new house, and buy surprise gifts for each other. Then spend 2 days on an Alleppey houseboat. Enjoy the privacy and luxury of having a boat to yourself with a private three man crew. Our blow-by-blow account of a houseboat holiday in Alleppey should convince you. End your Kerala honeymoon with a leisurely stay at Kumarakom. Ayurveda spa treatments, sunset cruise, cooking demo, yoga classes and just spending time with each other in your romantic private cottage.

Golden Triangle honeymoon

Delhi – Agra – Jaipur – Udaipur

Start with Delhi and its bounty of historical sights. Use our 4-day Delhi itinerary to make it hassle free. Leave early for a day trip to the Taj Mahal in Agra or if you want to take it slow, then stay a night at Agra. Travel to Jaipur and stay for a relaxed 5 days there. Don’t forget to carry our Insider Guide mentioned earlier. End your honeymoon with 2 days in the most romantic city in Rajasthan, Udaipur. It is also called the city of lakes. The Pichola Lake is the main attraction so try to book in a hotel near the lake. There’s a surfeit of forts and palaces to visit if you choose the Golden Triangle honeymoon so it’s wise to schedule a day of downtime every few days with spa treatments or relaxing at the hotel.

Outdoorsy Kerala honeymoon

Kochi Munnar Thekkady

We’ve covered Kochi and Munnar earlier in this post. Start with 3 days in Fort Kochi, then spend 5 days in romantic Munnar and then another 5 days in Thekkady. Both Munnar and Thekkady are perfect for an outdoorsy couple. Treks in the morning, wildlife spotting, spice garden visits and long walks in the plantations. Thekkady has the well-managed Periyar Tiger Reserve where apart from the tiger you can spot bison, elephant, giant squirrel and over 260 species of birds.

One whole month

Lucky lucky you! Can I just say how envious I am! For someone who has a month, India is your oyster. You have the time to go from boating in the Kerala backwaters to climbing the Himalayas. I suggest you use a planner for a customised honeymoon plan.
