Rains in Kerala and a few of my favourite things
Thursday, August 6th, 2015

By Sudha Mathew

Serendipity led me to this article on the Kerala Tourism website while researching something completely different. But this paragraph below stood out for perfectly encapsulating my emotions about the rains in Kerala. I love going back to my home in Kerala during the rains for a holiday. And my advice to travelers is to take the chance and experience this lesser known side of God’s Own Country.

“In Kerala, monsoon is not a time when life comes to a standstill. Rather, this is the time when life begins. Here, the monsoon comes with an attitude and character. At times, it pours steady and strong and on others, it appears to be quite coy. With interludes of sunshine, the magic is complete. The pure delight of seeing the sun peek out from behind a pregnant raincloud to bathe the land below in a swath of golden warmth while every bit of Nature stands drenched is something that needs to be experienced to be understood.”

Every monsoon, I miss Kerala. If I am not at Kerala for Christmas, I miss my family, get-togethers and our Syrian Christian food. But during the rains in Kerala, it is the land itself that I miss. The smell of wet earth, vermilion hibiscus flowers in bloom, listening to the raindrops falling while curled up in a warm duvet or watching the garden wiped clean of dust after a rainshower is magical. The closest I have come to feeling this way is during the monsoon in Goa but it is still not the same.

Like the song in the Sound of Music movie goes, here are a few of my favourite things (about rains in Kerala)…

Boats and Races, I love both.
