A fortnight of bliss: Experience the healing magic of Kerala ayurveda
Friday, September 13th, 2013
by Sudha Mathew

Kalari Kovilakom, a century old palace with fascinating stories has been restored into an unique experience of wellness. Thanks to the efforts of the CHG Earth Group, today this royal house is the best place to experience authentic Kerala ayurveda.

While luxury has different connotations, at Kalari Kovilakom luxury is synonymous to a healthy body and disciplined living. So here’s the hard part, once you step inside the palace there is no going out for the next 14 days. On arrival you will be asked to abstain from your leather shoes, all your gadgets and your regular clothes. Instead you will be given organic cotton clothes and mat sole shoes. And everyone has to wake up at 5.30 am each morning.

The daily routine you will be following here may not look like a holiday schedule at all. But believe me, the benefits of your stay at Kalari Kovilakom are way more than the difficulty of following a strict schedule for a couple of weeks.

Many of the Kerala Ayurveda medicines are prepared from herbs growing in the lush green garden of the palace. You are free to watch while trained practitioners prepare the medicines.

Secrets of Kerala Ayurveda revealed
You will be eating organic vegetables here cooked using minimum oil and herbal spices. Each guest here eats a different meal prepared as per the prescription of the ayurvedic doctor. Such is the level of personalized service here that even the herbal water that each guests have is different. . In fact when it is time to leave, you will be gifted with a CD loaded with the recipes to some of these preparations with the hope that you would continue following a healthy diet.

The Palace building
While I have been glorifying the rewards of adhering to a Kerala Ayurveda regime, how could I not tell you about the fascinating architecture. A tour of the palace compound will leave you charmed. A chance to stay in this beautiful heritage building is one of the best things about Kalari Kovilakom.
The palace has two main wings – the guest wing with old colonial styled rooms and the older palace wing which has traditional Kerala architecture.

While your days will be occupied with the strictly chalked out ayurvedic schedule, the evenings are for entertainment. Every evening brings a new cultural program of dance, singing or trained warriors showcasing their Kalaripayattu skills in a specially built arena.
De-stress, relax, rejuvenate and leave all your worldly worries behind while you experience the grace of palace living.
