Great summer holiday destinations in Kerala
Sunday, April 8th, 2012

By Sudha Mathew

To me, a summer holiday destination means somewhere cool and green.  So hill-stations are my default choice. To my surprise, there are a large number of people with the opposing view that a beach is a great holiday choice in the summer. According to my beach-obsessed friends and clients, the advantages of cool dips in the sea, beer and ice cream tasting better in the heat and skimpy clothes being the norm outweigh the scorching weather.

Whether you are a sun worshipper or a hill fanatic, the hotels in Kerala featured on seek&hide cover the whole spectrum from boutique hotel in Kochi to plantation resort in Munnar.

If you are tired of overexposed beaches and unruly crowds, then Marari beach is for you. A long sliver of beautiful clean white sand with low commercial activity, Marari beach is in Alleppey district. It can be reached in 2 hours from Cochin Airport, which makes it convenient for short breaks too.  We have two stunning resorts in Alleppey. These cottages on Marari beach are just a few minutes walk from the sea.

One of the iconic images of Kerala instantly recognizable by travelers around the world is that of a houseboat sailing in the backwaters of Kerala. A day on a houseboat in Alleppey is an unforgettable experience and one that should not be missed. You can easily combine the houseboat trip with a hotel in Kochi or one of the places mentioned above. You could also choose a houseboat in Kumarakom and combine it with a homestay in Kumarakom like Philipkuttys Farm.

Now for hill station enthusiasts like me, a holiday in Munnar or Thekkady is the perfect choice.  I love waking up to crisp, cool, pine-scented air and green vistas everywhere I glance. Litres of tea in the day replaced by red wine at night seem like essentials on this kind of a holiday.  You can choose from a range of hotels and homestays in Munnar and Thekkady.  Most of them are on large cardamom or tea plantations and offer free guided walks with naturalists. The stunning mountain views can be seen from the pictures of Casa del Fauno in Munnar and Paradisa at Thekkady. I suggest a minimum stay of three nights if you are planning this kind of holiday as it is about 4 hours drive from Cochin Airport

I have saved the best for the last. For a unique experience, Chittoor Kottaram is hard to beat. It ticks all the right boxes from lake-facing to history to great hospitality. Surrounded by water, Chittoor Kottaram is an erstwhile royal home converted into a gracious villa with a dedicated staff of five to take care of every need of a guest. Only one family or group occupies the three-bedroom villa at a time making it a truly royal experience.

All the places mentioned are happy to welcome children. Children usually love the experience of large open places, boat trips and mountain walks that open their minds to simple, non-urban pleasures. Let us know if you need help in planning the perfect summer getaway.

Happy holidays wherever you decide to travel!
