Best Holiday Destinations in India – Top 5 places to experience Dussehra
Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

A holiday in India during the festive season- your handy travel guide.

If you have ever thought about the best time to visit India, the season has just started! It’s the festive season in India, with Dussehra having just concluded, and Diwali falling on October 23rd, 2014. Here’s a handy, simple guide about Dussehra – its meaning and significance, where to watch the best of Dasara celebrations, and what else to do while you are there.

Dussehra: A Quick Overview

Dussehra – one festival, many forms, one unifying theme- the triumph of good over evil. Also called Vijaya Dashami and Dasara, this festival is the culmination of festivities spread over ten days. It has various names in various regions of India – Navaratri (nine nights), Durgotsav/Durga Puja (festival/worship of Goddess Durga) and so on. This festival is in a way the centerpiece of India’s (rather long) festive season, falling in between Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali.

While the north of India celebrates this festival with a Ram Lila, burning effigies of the evil demon king Ravan, many other regions celebrate the festival as the triumph of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.

Top 5 Indian destinations to experience Dasara at its best:
